Inland Vendee (20Km Radius of Aizenay)

  • Velo Rail (The railway pedalo), Commequiers/Coex: Railway track with pedalos for hire.

  • Haras Royal La Roche-Sur-Yon: Part of the National Horse Breeding Stud.

  • Eurotruche, Mache: Breeding Farm for Ostriches, Emus and Rheas.

  • Lac d'Apremont, Apremont/Mache: Chateau and Lake with picnic areas, beaches and Boat hire. Large Chateau and castle Apremont.

  • The Chateau de Bois Chaevalier, Near Lege: Moated Chateau.

  • Chateau de la Garnache, La Garnache: Interesting Feudal Castle.

  • Jardin De Olfacties, Coex: Garden with sweet smelling flowers, herbs etc. Wood and stream and waterfall.

Vendee Coast

There are approximately 140 Km of fine sandy beaches stretching from lle de Noirmoutier in the North to La Faut-Sur-Mer in the south. There are many resorts along the coast, and publicly owned pine forest backing the beaches. The main towns/resort worth visiting are:

IIe de NoirmoutierI: An island at the north of the region.  The Main industry is fishing particularly Oysters and Mussels: there is good shopping in the main town and the Sealand aquarium in the dock area.

St Jean-de-Monts. A main seaside resort with many attractions.

St Gilles-Croix-de-Vie: A small town with a pedestrianised shopping center and adjacent sandy beeches. At the fishing Port, boat trips are offered to the IIe d'Yeu and fishing trips can be arranged.

Les Sables-d'Olone: A large town, international sailing center and seaside resort with a long promenade and pedestrianised shopping area. North of the town at Olone-sur-Mer are large hypermarkets and other main shops.

Other attractions along the coast are:

  • Ocenile, Near Norirmoutier-en-L'ille: A recently opened aquatic entertainment complex.

  • Sealand Aquarium, Norirmoutier-en-Lille.

  • Parc Zoologique de Tranchet, Les Sables-d'Olone.

  • Motor Museum, near Bourgenay.

  • Chateau, Talmont-St-Hilaire: Medieval entertainment and games for Children.

Tourist attractions further a field.

  • La Roche-sur-Yon. 17Km. Departmental capital. Pedestrianised shopping center and large shops/hypermarkets on the outskirts.

  • Nante. 72Km. Historic seaport with many visitor attractions. Parking in the center is difficult but there are plenty within a short distance of the old port.

  • Cognac. 190Km Visits may be made to the Cognac producers in and around the town. These include, Hennessey, Martell, Camus, Otard, Remy Martin, Prince Hubert de Polignac. Visits may also be made by arrangement to the St Gobain glass factory.

  • Jarnac, 15Km from Cognac Courvoisier and Hire are produced here.

Theme parks.

  • Safari Africain - Planet Sauvage. Port-Saint-Pere. 55Km. African and Asian animals, picnic areas etc. Also Cite Marine the premier European center for the rehabilitation of Marine Mammals. Performances by Seals and Dolphins.

  • Grand Parc, Chateau du Puy du Fou. Near Chabotterie. 26Km. Theme park based on the Vendeen Wars including a spectacular event - the Cinescenie du Pay du Fou.

  • Futuroscope, Near Poitiers: 194Km. A unique theme park to bring together the very latest in giant screen Film Video and the Internet.
